I was aiming to go wild camping at Sandwood Bay but got delayed so Oldshoremore Beach was an accidental find and a very good one at that! Oldshoremore is in the north-west Highlands of Scotland, on the Atlantic coast, and it is stunningly beautiful.
Since originally finding Oldshoremore Beach, I have returned four times. It makes a great base for exploring the rest of the north-west Scottish Highlands.
Oldshoremore Beach Facilities
There is a small, free car park at Oldshoremore Beach which has a toilet block and potable water. The toilet block was closed on three of the occasions that I visited but it is now open between March & October.
The nearest shops & petrol stations are a few miles away in Kinlochbervie.
Walk from the car park along the path next to the graveyard to get access to the beach. The path is very steep in places. There is a gate at the top of the path with “Camp Here” handwritten in paint. It can be windy, I tend to position my tent behind one of the many massive boulders littering the area.
Be aware that sheep can be grazing in this area, they tend to leave you well alone though.
Things to do at Oldshoremore Beach
There is nothing to do at Oldshoremore Beach so you have to bring your own entertainment. There is a lot of birds living here, mainly pied wagtails. The beach is great for walking and there are sand dunes and rocky headlands to explore. There are often cows and sheep wandering on the sands at Oldshoremore Beach.
It would be possible to do some sea kayaking, the bay is reasonably sheltered but I wouldn’t venture out too far unless fully prepared. There is no mobile phone signal at Oldshoremore.
The area is great for photography, I have taken drone footage of Oldshoremore Beach as well as infrared photography of the surrounding area and astrophotography, as it is wonderfully dark at night.
How to get to Oldshoremore Beach
Oldshoremore is located in Sutherland, right on the west coast of Scotland. It is 2 miles north of Kinlochbervie, following the B801. It is well sign-posted. The roads are narrow and single-track with passing places. The scenery on the road is stunning with various hills and lochs scattered all around.
