Birds in Slow Motion

I wanted to try recording video of birds in slow motion but as my regular Blink birdcams don’t have a slow motion option, I opted to record them using a GoPro. I set the GoPro to record in HD with a framerate of 240fps, which when played back at 24fps, results in video which is 10 times slower than reality.

I’m pretty pleased with how the video came out, filming in slow motion allows you to see interactions that are too fast to notice in real-time. I even managed to get footage of the house sparrows bullying my goldfinches and physically kicking them off the bird feeders!

Recording birds in slow motion is fascinating and super-easy to do with any GoPro, I was using a GoPro Hero 7 Black but any other model will also record in 240fps.

If you have a GoPro and a bird feeder then try it out. Place the GoPro on a tripod near your feeder and then either start recording or connect to the GoPro with your phone to remotely start & stop the video without disturbing the birds.

Recording birds in your garden in slow motion is one of the easiest and most enjoyable creative bird photography methods, I recommend giving it a go and seeing what you get.
